Photographer in Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen

Tivoli is the one place in Copenhagen that photographs completely differently after dark. By day it is a charming old garden with flower beds and a pantomime theatre; once the lanterns come on it becomes a thicket of fairy-lights, golden bulbs and glowing ride canopies that turn the whole park into a warm, cinematic set. For a portrait session that is gold dust — there is nowhere else in the city where the background does this much work for you.

I shoot Tivoli almost exclusively in the evening, from about an hour before the gardens light up through the first hour after. That is the window where the ambient sky still has colour in it but the lights have come on, so your face is lit softly while the background glows. Once full darkness falls we work the lanterns and ride lights as bokeh behind you, which is the look most people are chasing when they book this session.

Why Tivoli works for photographs

The lights are the whole story. Tivoli runs something close to 100,000 bulbs across the gardens, and in the evening they create a warm, layered glow that flatters skin and gives portraits a depth no studio light can fake. The famous dragon boats, the illumination on the Nimb building and the strings of bulbs over the main walk all act as ready-made backdrops — you are standing inside a light installation, not in front of one.

Seasons change everything here. Summer Tivoli is lush and green, with flower carpets and the open lawn by the fountain. Halloween Tivoli drapes the gardens in pumpkins, cobwebs and amber light — the most atmospheric three weeks of the year for portraits. Christmas Tivoli adds snow machines, fir garlands and thousands of white lights, and is genuinely one of the most photographed places in Europe for a reason. If you are visiting Copenhagen in autumn or winter, this is the session I would book first.

The trade-off is crowds and cost. Tivoli is ticketed and busy from late morning, so we move deliberately and use the quieter side paths, the Nimb terrace and the gardens behind the concert hall where the lights are just as beautiful but the foot traffic halves.

  • Best time: evening, from one hour before lights-on through the first hour of darkness
  • Best seasons: Halloween (October) and Christmas (November–December) — the gardens transform
  • Avoid: midday in summer, when the lights are off and the park is at its busiest
  • Wear: solid dark tones — the light backdrop is already busy enough

How a Tivoli session runs

We meet at the main entrance just before the gardens light up. The first fifteen minutes are spent on the quieter paths and the fountain lawn, shooting against the flower beds and the Nimb façade while there is still colour in the sky. As the lights come on we move to the illuminated walk and the ride area, working the bulb strings as background and the lantern reflections as foreground.

The last ten minutes we cross to the Nimb terrace or the gardens behind the concert hall, where the crowds thin and the lights frame you without anyone walking through. Because Tivoli is compact, almost none of the 45 minutes is spent walking — it is one of the most shoot-efficient locations I offer.

If you have a Tivoli season pass or an annual card, bring it and we use that for entry; otherwise the session price does not include your garden admission, which I flag clearly before we book.

Sessions I shoot at Tivoli

Tivoli is a favourite for couple sessions — the lights and the atmosphere make for romantic, storybook frames that look unlike anything else in Copenhagen. It is also excellent for Instagram and content sessions, where the seasonal theming gives a set of frames that change completely from one visit to the next. Visitors often book it alongside a travel session as the one magical, distinctly Copenhagen evening of their trip.

Christmas Tivoli in particular is one of the most requested backdrops for family and solo portraits of the whole year. For formal headshots I would still steer you to Sluseholmen or Frederiksberg — the lights here are beautiful but too playful for LinkedIn.

Frequently Asked Questions

+Does the session price include Tivoli entrance?

No — Tivoli is a ticketed garden, so your admission is separate. A one-day entry is around DKK 135–165 depending on the season. If you have a Tivoli annual card, just bring it and we use that. I can add the entry to your booking or you can buy it yourself; either way I flag it before we confirm.

+What time do the lights come on at Tivoli?

It varies by season — in summer the lights come on around 9–9:30pm, in October and November from about 5:30pm, and in December from around 3:45pm. I confirm the exact lights-on time for your date when we book and set our start 45 to 60 minutes before it so we catch the sky-to-darkness transition.

+Is Tivoli too crowded for a photoshoot?

It is busy, but it is manageable. We move deliberately, use the quieter side paths and the Nimb terrace, and shoot in short bursts. The lights do most of the work, so we do not need a clear, empty background the way we do at Nyhavn — a little movement behind you actually adds to the atmosphere.

+Can we shoot inside the Tivoli rides?

Not on the rides themselves, but the illuminated ride canopies and the dragon boats are some of the best backdrops in the gardens. We shoot around and among them rather than from inside a moving ride.
