Couple Photography Copenhagen

I photograph couples the way I would want to be photographed myself — close, unposed and a little in love with the city around us. Whether you have been together for ten years or ten weeks, a session together in Copenhagen gives you something most couples never get around to making: honest photos of the two of you, taken by someone else, on purpose.

Most of the couples I work with have never done a photoshoot together before. That is completely normal, and it is exactly what I plan for. I do not hand you a pose and disappear behind the camera — I stay close, talk you through small movements, and give you something to do with your hands and your attention so the affection between you reads naturally rather than looking performed.

I also run one of my favourite kinds of sessions: the surprise proposal. I pose as a street photographer, approach a couple somewhere scenic, and ask if I can take their photo. A few frames in, the partner gets down on one knee. Nobody suspects a thing, and the reaction — the real one, unrehearsed and unfiltered — is exactly what ends up in the gallery.

A session built around your relationship, not a template

Every couple moves differently. Some are playful and need permission to be silly in public; others are quieter and photograph best standing close, talking softly, barely looking at the camera at all. I spend the first few minutes of every session simply watching how you interact before I start directing, so the prompts I give actually fit you rather than forcing you into somebody else's idea of a couple's shoot.

Because the session runs 45 minutes, we usually settle into one main location with a short walk to a second spot nearby — enough variety for the gallery to feel like a story rather than a single backdrop repeated ten times. I keep an eye on light, crowds and time so we are never rushing the parts that matter, like the quiet in-between moments that end up being everyone's favourite photos.

Where we shoot

Nyhavn is the obvious choice for a reason — the colours and the water do a lot of the work for you, especially early in the morning before the crowds arrive. For something quieter and more intimate, Christianshavn's canals and cobbled backstreets give us privacy and a slower pace. Kastellet's grass ramparts and the old windmill work beautifully in evening light, and if you want green and unhurried, Frederiksberg Gardens or the Botanical Garden's glasshouse are both excellent choices.

Couples who want a more contemporary feel often ask for Superkilen, where the bold colour blocks and graphic lines photograph like nowhere else in the city, or Sluseholmen, whose waterfront architecture gives a clean, modern backdrop. If the sea matters to your relationship, Amager Strandpark at golden hour is hard to beat.

Surprise proposal photography

This is a session your partner never knows is happening. We agree on a location, a rough time, and the story you will use to bring them there — often 'let's just go for a walk' is enough. I arrive early, blend in as a street photographer working the area, and approach the two of you as if you are simply a nice-looking couple I would like to photograph. Most people say yes without a second thought.

I take a handful of ordinary frames first, then step back at the right moment. What follows — the drop to one knee, the hands over the mouth, the laugh that turns into tears — happens in real time, and I am already shooting when it does. There is no second take, which is exactly why these photos feel different from a posed engagement session.

  • Full planning by message beforehand — I need the where and roughly when, nothing else
  • I never reveal myself as the photographer until after the proposal
  • Includes a short couple's session afterwards, once the champagne nerves settle

Posing guidance, especially for the awkward parts

The hardest part of any couple's shoot is usually the first two minutes, when everyone feels watched and unsure what to do with their hands. I give you small, specific things to do instead of a static pose — walk slowly, whisper something in your partner's ear, look at the view rather than the lens — and within a few frames the self-consciousness disappears. If one of you is far more comfortable in front of a camera than the other, I balance the direction so both of you look equally at ease in the final gallery.

Frequently Asked Questions

+Can you photograph a surprise proposal without my partner finding out?

Yes, that is the whole point. I pose as a street photographer and approach you both naturally, so your partner has no idea a session was planned. You just need to get them to the location.

+What if we have never done a couple's photoshoot before?

That describes most of the couples I photograph. I direct with simple, specific prompts throughout, so you never have to guess what to do with your hands or your face.

+Can we do two locations in one session?

Usually, yes, as long as they are within a short walk of each other. I will suggest a pairing that suits the mood you want, such as Nyhavn followed by the Nyhavn side streets, or Kastellet into the harbour.

+Do you photograph long-distance or newly arrived couples?

Often. A session is a lovely way to mark a visit, an anniversary, or simply the fact that you are both in the same city at the same time. Everything is delivered digitally, wherever you go next.

+How far in advance should we book a proposal shoot?

A few days' notice is usually enough, though weekends and golden hour slots fill first. Message me the rough date and location and we will confirm the details together.
