Photographer in Nyhavn, Copenhagen

Nyhavn is the photo everyone recognises before they have even landed: ochre, red and mustard townhouses stacked along a narrow canal, wooden masts leaning over the water, and a row of awnings that turn the whole street into a colour chart. It is also, by mid-morning, one of the busiest 300 metres in Denmark — which is exactly why the time we meet matters more here than at any other location I shoot.

I photograph Nyhavn almost exclusively between sunrise and about 9am. The canal faces roughly north-east, so first light hits the eastern row of houses directly and bounces off the water onto your face — soft, warm and flattering, with no harsh shadows under the eyes. The tourist boats have not started running yet, the restaurant chairs are still stacked, and the reflections in the canal are unbroken.

Why Nyhavn works for photographs

Three things do the heavy lifting here. The colour: the facades give you a saturated backdrop that needs no styling and works with almost any outfit as long as you avoid competing patterns. The water: the canal acts as a giant reflector, throwing light back up under the chin — the reason Nyhavn portraits look softer than anything shot against a stone wall a street away. And the depth: the boats, masts and receding row of houses give a long, layered background instead of a flat one, so you stand out from the scene rather than being pasted onto it.

The trade-off is people. From roughly 10am the quayside is shoulder to shoulder, and no amount of framing hides it. If your schedule genuinely only allows an afternoon session, I shoot from the bridge end and the opposite bank, where the crowd sits behind the camera rather than behind you, and we use the boats as foreground cover.

  • Best time: sunrise to 9am — empty quay, warm directional light, clean reflections
  • Second best: the last hour before sunset, shooting from the quieter southern bank
  • Avoid: 11am–4pm in summer unless you want the crowd in shot
  • Wear: solid colours. The facades are already loud enough for both of you

How a Nyhavn session runs

We meet at the Kongens Nytorv end and walk down the quiet side first, working the colour blocks one by one while the light is still low. Halfway along I usually move you onto the wooden mooring posts and the stone steps at the water's edge — those give a place to sit, lean and change your body line without it looking like a series of standing portraits.

The last fifteen minutes we cross to the far bank or step one street back into Sankt Annæ Plads, where the light is quieter and the backdrops are plain plaster and old doorways. It gives the gallery a second register: bold and colourful first, calm and editorial afterwards, all inside the same 45 minutes.

Sessions I shoot at Nyhavn

Nyhavn suits anything that benefits from colour and a sense of place. Visitors book it as a travel and vacation session because it is the one photo that says Copenhagen without a caption. Couples come for the same reason, and it is one of the most requested backdrops for couple photography and surprise proposals — a stranger with a camera on that quay is completely unremarkable, which is what makes the surprise work. It is also a strong choice for an Instagram content session, where the colour variation lets one 45-minute shoot produce a feed's worth of distinct frames.

It is a weaker choice for corporate headshots — for those I would send you to Sluseholmen or Frederiksberg instead, where the background stays neutral.

Frequently Asked Questions

+How early do we have to meet to get Nyhavn without crowds?

In summer, sunrise is around 4:30am and the quay is genuinely empty until about 7am. Most clients compromise at 7–8am, which is still very quiet and gives beautiful low light. In winter the sun rises after 8am, so a 9am start gives you both empty streets and good light.

+Can we shoot Nyhavn and a second location in 45 minutes?

Yes. Nyhavn is a five-minute walk from Sankt Annæ Plads, Amalienborg and Ofelia Plads, so pairing it with a quieter second backdrop is easy and something I plan into most sessions here.

+Is it allowed to photograph on the Nyhavn quay?

Yes — it is a public street and handheld photography without lighting stands needs no permit. I keep out of the restaurant seating areas and off the private moorings, which is the only thing anyone ever objects to.
