Beach Photographer at Amager Strandpark

Amager Strandpark is the only place in Copenhagen where you can put nothing but sand, water and sky behind someone and still be fifteen minutes from the city centre. Two kilometres of artificial beach, low dunes with marram grass, a lagoon on the inland side and the Øresund bridge on the horizon — it is the closest thing the city has to a blank canvas.

It is also the best sunset location I shoot. The beach faces east, so evening light comes from behind the camera and lands flat and golden on your face rather than silhouetting you, which is the opposite of what most people expect from a beach session and the reason these galleries look so warm.

Why Amager Strandpark works for photographs

Space is the whole point. There is no architecture to compete with, no passers-by walking through frame, and no visual clutter to edit around — just horizon lines. That emptiness is why beach portraits feel calm and why they crop so well for anything from a print to a profile picture.

The dunes add the variety that stops it becoming repetitive. Marram grass in the foreground gives depth and a soft, out-of-focus fringe; the dune ridges let me shoot slightly upward against clean sky; and the lagoon on the western side gives still water and reflections when the sea itself is choppy. On grey days the whole place turns silver and minimal, which suits a cooler, more editorial edit.

  • Best time: the 60 minutes before sunset — warm front light, long shadows on the sand
  • Also good: early morning, when the sea is flat and the beach is empty
  • Bring: a second layer. It is always five degrees colder here than in town
  • Wear: flowing fabrics. Wind is a feature at this location, not a problem

How a beach session runs

We meet at the Amager Strand metro station and cross the footbridge onto the island, which takes about five minutes and puts us straight into the dunes. I shoot the dune and grass frames first while the sun is still above the horizon, then move down to the waterline for the last twenty minutes as the light drops and warms.

If you are happy to get your feet wet, the shallow water at the tide line reflects the sky and gives the strongest frames of the session. If not, the dry sand and dune grass carry the whole shoot perfectly well — just tell me at booking so I plan the route accordingly.

Sessions I shoot at Amager Strandpark

Summer solo portraits are the most common booking here — airy, warm, uncluttered, and very different from anything shot in the city. It is also excellent for Instagram and content sessions, where wind, movement and open sky give a set of frames that stand out from the usual Copenhagen backdrops, and for couples who want walking, laughing, feet-in-the-water photos rather than posed ones.

For headshots and formal business portraits I would steer you elsewhere; the beach is beautiful but rarely the right register for LinkedIn.

Frequently Asked Questions

+What time is sunset at Amager Strandpark?

It ranges from about 3:40pm in late December to nearly 10pm in late June. I always confirm the exact sunset time for your date when we book and set the start 60 to 75 minutes before it.

+Is it too windy for a photoshoot?

It is usually breezy, and that generally helps — moving hair and fabric look better in photographs than perfectly still ones. On genuinely strong wind days we shoot on the sheltered lagoon side instead, which is a two-minute walk.

+How do we get there?

The M2 metro from the city centre takes around 12 minutes to Amager Strand, then a five-minute walk. For sessions further out of town I can also arrange transport from the city centre.
