Couple Photoshoot Ideas in Copenhagen
Couple sessions are some of my favourite to shoot, partly because there's already a real dynamic between two people to photograph rather than one that needs manufacturing. The job is mostly about choosing a location and a set of prompts that let that dynamic show, rather than forcing a stiff, hand-in-hand-facing-the-camera pose.
Here are the ideas, locations and prompts I actually use with couples booking a session in Copenhagen.
Nyhavn for a classic, romantic set
Nyhavn's colourful facades and canal give couples a warm, romantic backdrop that needs very little extra styling to work. Early morning is best, both for fewer people in the background and for the softer light — harsh midday sun on such a bright-coloured backdrop can be a lot for two subjects to compete against.
Kastellet for space and quieter moments
Kastellet's grass ramparts and quiet paths give couples room to walk, talk and exist together without a crowd around, which tends to produce the most natural expressions of the whole session. It's particularly good in the evening, when the low light comes in across the grass and there's usually hardly anyone else around.
Christianshavn for a relaxed, everyday feel
If you want photos that feel like a normal afternoon together rather than a formal 'couple shoot,' Christianshavn's canals and cobbled backstreets are ideal — grab a coffee nearby beforehand and walk over together, and I'll photograph you along the way rather than only at a fixed spot.
Amager Strandpark for something more open and playful
For couples who want a lighter, more playful set — walking along the shoreline, a bit of laughing, open sky in the background — Amager Strandpark's beach and dunes give that space without needing to travel outside the city.
Posing prompts that don't feel staged
I rarely ask couples to hold a static pose. Instead: walk together and talk, one partner whispers something to make the other laugh, forehead-to-forehead for a quiet moment, or simply stand close and talk to each other while I shoot from a slight distance. These produce far more natural body language than 'look at the camera and smile' ever does.
For couples who feel a bit awkward in front of a camera together, I'll usually start with a walking shot first — it takes the pressure off standing still and being looked at.
- Walk and talk, shot mid-motion
- One partner makes the other laugh
- Forehead-to-forehead, eyes closed
- Stand close and talk to each other, not the camera
Outfits for two people
I don't recommend matching outfits — it tends to look staged. A shared colour palette works far better: two or three complementary tones between you, rather than identical colours or clashing ones. Bring one coordinated outfit and, if you want variety, a second more casual option for a change partway through.
Anniversaries, proposals and milestone sessions
If the session marks something specific — an anniversary, a proposal, a first year in Copenhagen together — tell me beforehand. I'll build a bit more time into the plan around that moment specifically, and it tends to produce noticeably more genuine expressions than a session with no occasion attached, simply because there's something real happening rather than being performed for the camera.
