Beyond the Little Mermaid: 10 Places Near Copenhagen Only Locals Know

Most visitors to Copenhagen see the same short list: Nyhavn, the Little Mermaid, Tivoli, maybe Christiania. All worth it. But the region around the city rewards anyone willing to sit on a train for forty minutes, and almost nobody does.

These are ten places within roughly 50 km of the centre that I return to on days off and, occasionally, with clients. Cobbled fishing towns, chalk cliffs, forest lakes and a stretch of north coast where the sun actually sets over water.

1. Dragør and its old fort

Dragør is a preserved fishing town twenty minutes south of the airport: yellow houses, black doors, hollyhocks against lime-washed walls, and streets narrow enough that cars mostly give up. Walk past the harbour to Dragør Fort, a low earthwork battery on the water that almost no visitor bothers with.

Late afternoon is best. The light comes in sideways off the Øresund and the whole town turns the colour of butter.

2. Amager Fælled

A large stretch of open scrubland and wetland inside the city limits, and still one of the emptiest places you can stand near Copenhagen. Reeds, birch, grazing cattle, and long uninterrupted horizons.

It feels nothing like a capital city, which is precisely the point.

3. Kalvebod Fælled and the wooden boardwalks

South of Amager Fælled, the landscape opens further into former seabed. Raised wooden walkways cut across marsh and heath, and on a still morning the water sits like glass on either side.

Bring layers. There is nothing out here to block the wind.

4. Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød

Everyone knows Kronborg. Fewer make it to Frederiksborg, a Renaissance castle sitting on three islands in a lake, with baroque gardens terraced up the far bank.

Walk to the far end of the gardens and turn around. The view back across the water to the castle is the one worth the trip.

5. Gilleleje harbour

A working fishing harbour on the north coast, with smokehouses, stacked crates and boats that are used rather than displayed. It is unglamorous in the best way.

Eat something smoked, then walk east along the shore until the houses stop.

6. Sunset at Rågeleje

The north coast of Zealand faces the Kattegat, which means it is one of the only places near Copenhagen where the sun sets straight into open water. Rågeleje is a quiet stretch of sand and low dune with almost no infrastructure.

In June the light lingers past ten in the evening and the whole beach goes copper.

7. Møns Klint

Further out than the rest of this list, but worth the drive or the long train and bus combination. White chalk cliffs falling 120 metres into turquoise water, with beech forest running right up to the edge.

The staircase down to the beach is punishing on the way back up. Go anyway.

8. Dyrehaven and the Hermitage

An old royal hunting forest north of the city, full of ancient oaks and around two thousand free-roaming deer. The hunting lodge sits alone on a rise in the middle of open grassland.

Autumn mornings here, with mist between the trees and stags in the distance, are as good as it gets this close to a capital.

9. Furesøen and the lakes north of the city

Denmark's deepest lake, ringed by reeds and beech woods, twenty-five minutes by S-train. Rent a rowing boat, or walk the wooded path along the eastern shore.

Very still, very green, and almost entirely local.

10. Stevns Klint

A UNESCO-listed chalk cliff south of Køge, with a small church perched at the edge where part of the churchyard has already fallen into the sea. There is also a cold war bunker cut into the rock beneath it.

Fewer people than Møns Klint, and a stranger, quieter atmosphere.

How to plan a day out of the city

Almost all of these are reachable on public transport with a bit of patience, and the regional trains are comfortable enough that the journey is part of the day rather than a cost of it.

  • Dragør, Amager Fælled, Kalvebod Fælled: under 40 minutes from the centre
  • Dyrehaven, Furesøen, Hillerød: 25 to 45 minutes by S-train
  • Gilleleje and Rågeleje: around an hour and a half, best as a full day
  • Møns Klint and Stevns Klint: plan the whole day, check return times
